abstract

abstract application of salicylic acid (sa) as a phytohormone has been increased due to its role in plant tolerance to environmental stresses such as drought. the main goal of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of sa on morphological and physiological characteristics of cucumber seedlings under drought stress. a factorial experiment based on completely randomized block design was conducted with 5 levels of sa (0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1mm) and 3 levels of drought stress, daily irrigation (control) and irrigation period of 3 and 6 days with 3 replications. sa was sprayed on shoots of the seedlings at 3-4 leaf stage under drought stress. the results showed that sa increased leaf area and chlorophyll content by 60 and 15 percent, respectively. in contrast, application of (1mm) sa, decreased stomatal conductance by 96%. stem diameter, plantlet height, leaf number, shoot and root dry weight, increased by applying sa compared to control. seedling height, shoot dry weight and leaf area, decreased with increasing drought stress, whereas increased due sa application. interaction between sa application and drought stress showed no significant effects on stomatal conductance, stem diameter, root dry weight. as conclusion salicylic acid treatment increased mentioned physiological and growth parameters in cucumber seedlings.

effects of salicylic acid on morphological and physiological characteristics of cucumber seedling (cucumis sativus cv. super dominus) under drought stress

application of salicylic acid (sa) as a phytohormone has been increased due to resistance to stresses such as drought. the main goal of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of sa on morphological and physiological characteristics of cucumber seedlings under drought stress. for this purpose a factorial trial based on completely randomized design was conducted with 5 levels of sa (0 (contr...

Influence of salicylic acid pre-treatment on emergence and early seedling growth of cucumber (Cucumis sativus)under salt stress

Salicylic acid (SA) is a common, plant-produced signal molecule that is responsible for inducing tolerance to a number of biotic and abiotic stresses. An experiment was therefore conducted to test whether the application of SA at various concentrations (0, 0.25, 0.50 or 1.0 mM) through a seed-soaking method would protect cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) seedlings subjected to salt stress. Aft...

Effects of Foliar Application of Salicylic Acid and Spermine on the Growth and Root Morphological Characteristics of Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea L.) Under Drought Stress

In order to study the effects of water deficit and foliar application of salicylic acid and spermine on dry matter production and biochemical and morphological treats of Echinacea purpurea, a split plot experiment was conducted based on randomized complete block design with three replicated during 2016- 2017 growing seasons at research field of Institute of Forests and Rangelands, Iran. In this...

Effect of Paclobutrazol on Some Morphological and Physiological Characteristics of Petunia under Drought Stress

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of paclobutrazol as an anti-gibberellin on some morpho-physiological characteristics of Petunia × grandiflora ‘Bravo Blue’, and determine the optimum concentration of paclobutrazol for drought resistance in this plant. The experiment was carried out as factorial based on completely randomized design with three replications in greenhouse. T...

Positive effects of salicylic acid on some biochemical and physiological parameters of Aloysia citrodora under drought stress

Lippia citriodora H.B.K. is a valuable medicinal plant of Verbenaceae family. This study was calculated to evaluate potential role of salicylic acid (SA) in diminish the harmful effects of drought stress on L. citriodora plants. SA (0.5 and 1 mM) was used to L. citriodora plants grown under stressed (5, 10, 15 and 20% PEG) and unstressed conditions. Fresh weight (FW) and relative water content ...
